Cosmetic Surgery - Fillers

CosmoDerm™
CosmoDerm™ is a collagen dermal (skin) filler made from human collagen and injected just below the skin's surface to smooth wrinkles, fill in minor furrows and folds, and restore the lip border.

Collagen is the most abundant natural protein found in the body and provides structural support to skin, muscle, tendons, and bone. Fibers of collagen are woven together, like threads in fabric, to form a framework into which new cells can grow. In the skin, collagen provides texture, resiliency and shape.

CosmoDerm™ is similar to collagen as a natural and subtle looking injectable filler; but it is made from human collagen as opposed to bovine material. Therefore, the need for pre-treatment testing is eliminated.

CosmoDerm™ can be done in a single visit treatment. It takes very little time to do the actual procedure and there is little to no recovery time. Like bovine collagen, CosmoDerm™ is formulated with an anesthetic for more comfort .

The most common areas treated are the smile lines around your nose and mouth, frown line between the eyes, acne scars, fine lines above the mouth, and the lip border to add definition.

To maintain optimal correction, touch-up injections are usually needed four or more times a year. The amount of CosmoDerm™ used during follow-up treatments is often less than that used in the initial treatment. Without ongoing treatments, the CosmDerm™ is gradually absorbed by the body and your face returns to its original contours.

RADIESSE™
Radiesse is an injectable product for the filling of folds and lines as well as replacing volume in cheeks and facial hollows.

Radiesse consists of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in gel (carboxymethycellulose). Because calcium hydroxylapatite is a normal constituent of bone, it should not elicit a chronic inflammatory or immune response. Additionally, the gel carrier doesn’t require allergy testing such as required with some injectable fillers.

Calcium hydroxylapatite has been used in humans for a long time in prosthetic implants in dental, facial, and orthopedic surgery remains soft without new bone formation when injected into soft tissue.  The longest term studies come from Italy and suggest that Radiesse shows promise as a new agent for facial contouring with no serious side effects and reasonable efficacy and durability. Clinical trials have been completed in the U.S. for the cosmetic use of Radiesse.

Frequently asked questions

How long will the Radiesse last?
Radiesse patients are encouraged to return for a 2nd treatment or touch-up for optimal correction. Patients can then expect a correction which last around two years although some treatments will last as little as 6 months and as many as three years or longer.

What areas of the face are normally treated with Radiesse?
Typical Radiesse treatments include:  smoothing and contouring smile lines or nasolabial folds, wrinkles at the corner of the mouth, acne scars, facial defects or recessions, frown lines, restoring volume in and around the cheeks, modest enhancement or correcting asymmetrical features.

Will the Radiesse become hard, calcified or noticeable to touch?
To the contrary…Radiesse will remain soft and take on the characteristics of the surrounding tissue.  New soft tissue will gradually replace the Radiesse over time with most replacement occurring within three months.  Patients report Radiance remaining soft.

Are there any lingering effects of the treatment and when can I return to my normal activities?
There is minor inflammation or swelling from the treatment as a result of the expansion of facial tissue.  This is normally resolved well within 24 hours but has been reported to last as long as 48 hours for some patients.  Most patients resume normal activities only a few hours after receiving treatment.  Application of ice intermittently for a short period after the treatment will help reduce any swelling.

Sculptraä™

WHAT IS SCULPTRA
ä?

Sculptraä is a synthetic injectable material known as”poly-L-lactic acid”. Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible, biodegradable material that has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue implants, and other types of implants.

WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM TREATMENT WITH SCULPTRAä?

Sculptra has been used extensively in Europe in the 1990’s for cosmetic correction of facial lipoatrophy due to aging and the facial fat loss in people with human immunodeficiency virus.

ARE SKIN TESTS NEEDED BEFORE TREATMENT WITH SCULPTRAä?

No skin testing is required prior to use.

HOW DOES SCULPTRAä WORK?

Sculptra is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. Sculptra provides an increase in skin thickness. Visible results appear within the first few treatment sessions. Sculptra will not correct the underlying cause of the facial fat loss, but will help improve the appearance by increasing skin thickness in the treated area.

ARE THE RESULTS FROM SCULPTRAä IMMEDIATE?

No. At your first treatment visit it may appear that Sculptra worked immediately. That is because of swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute it. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is absorbed by your body, you may look as you did before your treatment.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?

Your physician will decide with you the number of treatment sessions and the amount of Sculptra you will need at each application. Patients with pronounced facial fat loss may require three to six treatment sessions. Touch-ups may be needed to maintain the desired result.

HOW OFTEN ARE TREATMENTS GIVEN?

Your physician will see you two or more weeks after each procedure to assess the need for additional treatments.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

Effects will differ with each patient but the average time reported in clinical trials is two years. DermikÒ is in the process of studying the long- term effects of Sculptra  beyond two years.

Restylane™

What is Restylane?
Restylane contains hyaluronic acid in the form of a crystal gel. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is present in all living organisms and in your skin so is therefore safe to use and requires no pre test.

Procedure
Restylane is injected into the skin to lift a wrinkle or fold and can also be used for lip enhancement. Restylane works together with the body’s own hyaluronic acid and joins forces to create volume. The area of treatment can appear red and swollen immediately following the procedure, although this should resolve itself within a day or two. Makeup can be applied immediately and should easily cover any temporary redness.

How long does it last?
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and consequently dissolves naturally with time. How long the effects of a Restylane treatment lasts is very individual and depends on many factors such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle and age as well as on the degree of perfection expected by the patient. The majority of cases however, report a  50 to 80 % retention after 6 months. Many people choose to have touchups about every 6 months.

Perlane vs. Restylane
The difference between Restylane and Perlane is the size of the particle (with Perlane containing more hyaluronic acid). This means that Perlane does a better job of filling deep lines while Restylane is used in fine lines or in thin skinned people.

JUVEDERM™

Juvederm™ is a hyaluronic acid in injectable form for filling facial lines and wrinkles, enhancing the lips and correcting small facial scars and minor imperfections.  Juvederm™ is the “next generation” family of smooth, long-lasting gel dermal fillers, and the advance in hyaluronic acid cosmetic filler technology. Over recent years, hyaluronic acid, a complex sugar already found naturally in the body, has become a favored compound for replenishing the areas of the face where the skin’s volume and fullness has been lost.

In the body, hyaluronic acid fills the space between collagen and elastin fibers of the skin. It is present in all living cells; attracting and binding water, hydrating and giving the skin smoothness and volume. However, as the body ages , the ability of the body’s cells to manufacture its own hyaluronic acid is diminished, resulting in the loss of skin volume, producing folds and wrinkles.

Juvederm™ is biosynthetic and of non-animal origin. Since it is not created from an animal source, there is little chance of allergic reaction. The formula is highly biocompatible, and no testing is required prior to administration. It has been proven to be safe and effective for skin of all types and colors.

As with other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, Juvederm™ is gradually absorbed naturally into the body.
