Putting Tummy Fat On Your Face PDF Print E-mail

A little nip here, a little injection here. Just consider it a "redistribution" of your fat.

For some, it may sound too good to be true.  Then again, it may sound crazy:  Using liposuction to take fat from your trouble spots like thighs and stomach, and having it transplanted on your aging face.

You can know take extra fat from your body and ?plump? up your face.

NBC Connecticut visited the New Haven office of Dermatologist Lisa Donofrio to see what this fat transfer procedure is all about.  She's done almost 6,000 of these procedures, she says -- mostly on women.
“I came here initially and said let’s just lift the eye, and she said but you’ll look so much better if you lift a little under here, and let’s lift the cheek up, and by doing that you’ll reflect light differently and it’s a more youthful appearance” said one Connecticut fat-transferee, who for some reason didn't want to share her name.
As a 52-year-old woman she wanted to remain competitive in the workforce, and look more youthful.
Some patients have described the procedure as softening the contours of their face, says Donofrio.
She said many patients like how they look when they smile. Donofrio said smiling lifts the cheek forward, and gives an idea of what a person’s face would look like after the fat transfer.
“Many women choose this procedure because facial fillers like Restylane only last about a year and the cost adds up," she said.
Transferring your own fat can last up to 5 years, and she points out it is less invasive than a surgical facelift.
And while she says it is most effective in the upper third of the face, body fat can also be injected around the mouth, though it doesn't last as long in that area.
But of course, it doesn't come cheap.  The procedure requires 3 to 6 treatments over several months, and can cost between $4,000 and $7,000 dollars in all, says Donofrio.  And just try getting this one past your insurance company.

What is the Pearl Fractional Laser?

Pearl Fractional is a new laser perfected for treating photodamaged skin with just one treatment. Patients see improvements in fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, sun damage, tone and texture which results in a noticabley smoother, brighter, complexion. Also, the Pearl is great for acne scarring.

How does the Pearl Fractional Laser work?

Fractional therapy describes a treatment that hits only a fraction of the skin with the laser beam in a pattern of tiny dots. With Pearl Fractional, laser pulses place tiny holes in the skin. Columns of damaged tissue are selectively removed, leaving surrounding skin intact. The treatment shortens healing time and stimulates the body's own natural process for creating new collagen, plumping the skin from below and reversing photoaging and other imperfections. The tiny holes facilitate a rapid recovery and deep treatment provides results in a single session. Most patients will see a significant improvement after just one treatment.
How does Pearl Fractional treatment feel?

Most patients describe the treatment as a series of fast, hot pinches. A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin prior to the treatment to alleviate most discomfort.
When will I see results? How soon can I wear make-up?
Patients are red and swollen for 7-10 days. Most patients see improvement one week after treatment. Maximum results occur in one to three months. Patients may apply make-up five to seven days later.

What is the Liquid Face Lift?

The “liquid” or non-surgical face lift is a technique using injectable fillers like Restylane, Radiesse, Juvederm, ect., as well as your own body fat to restore the original shape and volume of the face. This new generation of fillers and fat can return one’s face to a more youthful look. It is wonderful to have the ability to reframe the eyes, lift the cheeks, define the jawline, etc., without invasive surgery.

This technique can restore the face to a softer and slightly rounder look rather than the angular, tight look of the surgical face lift. There are occasions when both the surgical and non-surgical techniques are used together to achieve a desired result. Nevertheless, the non-surgical face lift can produce excellent results without the bother, cost and risk associated with conventional invasive surgery.

See for yourself. Pull some old photos of yourself and you will see the fullness around the eyes, cheeks and so on. You can also look at models in the magazines and check out the areas that are contributing to their lack of wrinkles.

Dr Donofrio is not only familiar with all the available filling materials; but has done the pharmaceutical studies comparing the effectiveness of most of them. The numerous fillers available today can make the choice of which one to use quite confusing. Dr. Donofrio is amply equipped to suggest which material or procedure would be best for a particular area. Incidentally, Dr. Donofrio was named the best physician for fat transfers and injectable fillers in the New York Times Magazine’s “The List”; and in our practice she does all her own injections. (of course).

Look for a more in depth discussion of the various fillers and their most common use in a future newsletter. You may, in the meantime, call our office and ask for Christina if you would like a more detailed explanation now.
