Did you know that skin cancer accounts for almost half of all cancers treated annually? Of those cancers, 3.5 million are basal cell and squamous cell cancers and 76,000 are Melanoma.
Since the skin is our largest organ, which is responsible for protecting us from bacteria, germs, regulating our temperature and disposing of bodily waste through sweat, it has a big job to do. However, because of the skin’s protective nature, it is also exposed to the sun for our whole life. Due to overexposure and sunburns the skin cells can get destroyed, mutating and becoming cancerous.
The Savin Center takes an aggressive stance towards the treatment and management of skin cancers. The first line of defense is protecting yourself from the sun with sunscreen and trying to staying out of the sun from 10 AM -2 PM, when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Secondly, we recommend annual skin care body checks with our board-certified dermatologists. Early detection of skin changes is the best line of defense to treating and managing and skin cancer development.
The Savin Center uses an FDA-approved treatment of pre-cancers called Photodynamic Therapy. This relatively new technique is used to clear the skin of any potential pre-cancerous lesions called actinic keratosis. In this revolutionary treatment, a topical medicine called Levulan is applied to the skin, then the clients sits for 15 minutes under a “blue light” that activates the Levulan. The synergy between the medicine and light destroys any cancer cells in the skin. This treatment requires clients to stay out of the sun for 48-72 hours and then the skin will peel, removing all pre-cancerous cells. The results are dramatic; the skin is restored to its naturally healthy state.
